In the year of The Queen's Golden Jubilee, City found themselves in the First Division following relegation from the Premier League.

The spell in the second tier didn’t last very long however, and The Blues were promoted at the first time of asking - winning the league by a clear 10 points.

The team exited the FA Cup in the fifth round, losing 1-0 away to Newcastle United. In similar fashion, they only managed the fourth round of the League Cup.

Manager : Kevin Keegan

Keegan had a tough job on his hands when he took over the reins at City.

However, showing strength in the face of adversity, he signed experienced international players like Stuart Pearce and Ali Benarbia and went on to win promotion back to the top flight.

Keegan went on to sign a host of players over the next two seasons, including Nicolas Anelka and Peter Schmeichel, but managed only moderate success in the league and little in cup competitions.

He agreed to leave the club in March 2005, after telling the chairman his desire to retire from football at the end of the season.

Captain : Stuart Pearce

Pearce joined The Blues in 2001 for what would be the final season in his career.

Nicknamed "Psycho", for his unforgiving style of play, he was a courageous competitor and tough tackling defender.

He captained the team to success in the First Division, during which time he set himself the target of reaching 100 career goals. The opportunity presented itself on the final day of the season, against Portsmouth, when he took a penalty kick four minutes into injury time. But, fate conspired against him, and he bowed out just one short of his century.

Top scorer : Shaun Goater

Key player : Ali Benarbia

Benarbia was signed on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2001 and quickly became a firm favourite among City fans.

After a stand out league performance, he won the club’s player of the year and was named in a select side for the First Division.

He was appointed captain in the 2002-03 season, but he struggled with the pace of the Premier League and was much less influential.

He played his final game for the club against Barcelona in 2003, before announcing his retirement.
