City’s open training session at the Bukit Jalil Stadium proved to be a colourful occasion with around 4,000 fans attending.
The locals certainly know their stuff, too, treating manager Roberto Mancini to a rendition of his ‘Volare’ theme and there were also several other familiar chants emanating from the stands.
There were hundreds of City shirts from the past and present among the crowd suggesting the Blues already have a sizeable following in Malaysia and their enthusiasm for the team was infectious.
Though the temperatures had been in the late seventies all day with high humidity, there was a gentle breeze and cooler conditions for the session which was light and based more around positional play.
The biggest cheer of the afternoon was reserved for the manager - who took part in a short-sided game – when he nodded home David Platt’s chip at the far post. The boss, reminiscing of days gone by, duly acknowledged the crowd with a celebratory clenched fist.
The game ended with Adam Johnson suggesting his team, which included Denis Suarez and Marko Lopes, had won by one goal, but he was overruled by the referee – opposition analysis coach Pedro Marques – who gave victory to Mancini’s side. AJ is now demanding video evidence to back his claims!
The players rounded off the session by kicking 100 footballs into the ecstatic crowd and with approaching 60,000 people expected for tomorrow’s game against a Malaysia XI, it promises to be a noisy and colourful occasion.
Malaysia XI v City is live on ESPN, kick-off 21.45pm (14:45pm UK time).
