According to the Sunday’s media, Joe Hart is struggling to be fit for this afternoon’s Community Shield match against Chelsea after suffering a minor back injury.
The Daily Mail reports that Costel Pantilimon is set to replace the England keeper for the match at Villa Park.
“Manchester City and England goalkeeper Joe Hart is out of the Community Shield and England's friendly against Italy on Wednesday,” reports the paper.
“Hart has suffered a minor back injury, which means Norwich's John Ruddy will make his England debut in Berne and manager Roy Hodgson may have to consider putting Birmingham's Jack Butland on the bench.”
Meanwhile, David Silva seems to have been studying his manager’s press conferences, as he heaped pressure on Chelsea striker Fernando Torres ahead of the match.
"Chelsea will notice Drogba's absence because he was important for them. But in football things come to an end and now is the moment of truth for Torres,” Silva told the Mirror.
"It may be the most important season of his life, because he will have more minutes on the field.”
Very good, David.
A new transfer target has also emerged this morning – that of Everton’s Jack Rodwell.
We seem to be still very much at the “Sky Sports understands” stage but they reckon he is on the radar of Roberto Mancini as the Italian looks to strengthen his title-winning team.
“They have had a long-term interest in Rodwell and it is understood they are readying a move for the 21-year-old,” reads the Sky Sports website.
“Rodwell has been regarded as one of English football's finest prospects for a few years and has built on that reputation with a series of impressive performances for Everton.”
Don’t forget that our official website is the only place to learn of confirmed transfers.
Finally, Paul Wilson has written a great piece that should get your appetites whetted ahead of the new season, entitled “The Games are nearly over, let the national game begin.”
