Gunnar Nielsen joined City on a free transfer in February 2009 on a two-and-a-half year deal, having previously worked with then-manager Mark Hughes and goalkeeping coach Kevin Hitchcock whilst at Blackburn Rovers.

Hailing from the Faroe Islands, Gunnar had failed to make it into the first team at Ewood Park and spent time at Motherwell on loan before City snapped him up.

Following a short spell at Wrexham on another loan deal where he made four appearances late in the 2008/09 season, Gunnar's consistency saw him get the nod for the senior bench a year later as well as earning two full caps for his country. When Shay Given dislocated a shoulder at the Emirates Stadium, Gunnar became the first Faroese to play in the Premier League.

Gunnar endured a stop-start 2010/11 season, with a shoulder injury cutting short his loan spell at Tranmere Rovers prematurely. After recovering, he then suffered a cruciate ligament rupture to his knee during City's EDS Barclays' Premier Reserve League defeat against Bolton Wanderers in February 2011. The injury has ruled him out of action for up to a year.
