City on Demichelis:

Martin Demichelis became City’s fifth summer signing of the 2013/14 summer transfer window in 2013.

Recognised as one of Europe’s most solid and dependable centre-backs, the Argentine international joined compatriots Sergio Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta in the City squad.

Demichelis began his career at River Plate and made his debut on 2 September 2001 in a game against Estudiantes de La Plata.

A year into his spell as a first-teamer with Los Millonarios, Manuel Pellegrini was appointed manager at Estadio Monumental and the defender became a firm fans favourite as they lifted the Argentine Primera División title together.

It only took Martin 51 appearances in just under three years in his homeland before Bayern Munich swooped for his services, taking the Justiniano Posse-born man to the Bundesliga where he has stayed for most of his career.

At the Allianz Arena, Demichelis initially struggled to make an impact as a series of minor injuries limited his involvement in the first-team.

However, that changed when Felix Magath was appointed as Bayern manager in 2004, who often fielded Martin as a defensive midfielder over the course of 75 appearances in two seasons.

In those two campaigns, Bayern won back-to-back Bundesliga and German cup doubles – two of four that the Argentine would win during a successful seven-year spell in Munich.

The next two doubles would arrive under Jurgen Klinsmann and Louis Van Gaal in 2008 and 2010 respectively, with Martin reverting back to his more familiar role at the centre of defence.

Under Van Gaal, Bayern reached Martin’s only UEFA Champions League final in 2009/10, though it would not be an occasion for the defender to relish as Jose Mourinho’s Inter defeated the German side 2-0.

It was at this point that Demichelis sought a new challenge and was reunited with Pellegrini at Malaga after their successful year at River Plate together.

The reunited pair achieved Champions League qualification for the first time in the club’s history in their first season and Martin got them on their way by scoring their first ever goal in the competition in the play-off win over Panathinaikos.

Malaga defied all expectations by advancing from a group including Milan, Anderlecht and Zenit and proceeded to knock out Porto in the round of 16.

In the quarter-finals Los Boqueneros were desperately unfortunate to be eliminated after a late and highly controversial winning goal from Borussia Dortmund.

After Pellegrini accepted the offer to become Roberto Mancini’s successor at City, Demichelis joined Atletico Madrid as a free agent in July 2013.

Martin never made a first-team appearance for Los Colchoneros, opting to join his former boss in the English Premier League – the latest stop in a trophy-laden, nation-hopping career.

Martin won his first Premier League title in 2013/14 and was also a Capital One Cup winner as City beat Sunderland 3-1 at Wembley.

He signed a one-year contract extension on 12 March 2014.
